The cup is half full

I had a really good discussion with my wife Nancy today. I've been obsessing about the problems I've been having with my recording computer and haven't been very good company. Next weekend is my long weekend off and we have been kicking around the idea of getting away, but Nancy said she doesn't want to spend the time and money of getting away just to have me thinking about my computer problems.

Good point.

So I've decided to look upon the cup as half full. I haven't accomplished everything I hoped to in these past few months, but I have made a huge dent in my recording problems and especially in my understanding of computers. I have acquired many new bits and pieces, particularly a Echo Gina3g soundcard that is very cool.

So what am I so worried about?

I think next weekend will be very cool.

capital punishment is human sacrifice

From Deuteronomy 21:

If a man is found slain... and it is not known who killed him... Then the elders of the town shall take a heifer... they are to break the heifer's neck... Then the elders shall declare... "Accept this atonement for your people Israel... and do not hold your people guilty of the blood of an innocent man." And the bloodshed shall be atoned for.

It can be rather depressing reading the OT, with all of the stuff about killing and cleansing by blood and all that. But the thing that keeps me reading it is: first of all it is real. Instead of pagan myths there is a laying out of the hopelessly desperate situation of humankind. Second when I read of all the OT wrath I think of the fact that Jesus accepted all of God's wrath for us.

People who are proponents of capital punishment based supposedly on what the Bible says don't actually believe this. They believe that Jesus' death on the cross only set aside so called ritualistic cleansing, such as the sacrifice of animals for atonement. On the other hand, the capital punishment provisions are still in place (so they say) because Jesus' death only did away with the need for so called ritualistic cleansing.

What exactly is the distinction? Everyone understands the "life for life" concept. But although we don't sacrifice animals anymore to atone for bloodshed, we do sacrifice people? The whole basis of Jesus' atonement is that we don't have to make sacrifices anymore- He is our sacrifice.

So why are we still sacrificing human lives? The land is cleansed by the blood of Jesus and nothing more.

too lazy to blog

I'm too lazy to blog just now, so I guess I'll post an interesting e-mail my wife received.

What's really funny about it is that my wife and I actually have 3 children. Don't worry- we are all just fine!

BUSINESS PROPOSAL

Dear Kohn,

I am Barr. Johnson Saarumi, a legal practitioner, I am the personal attorney
to Mr.Fredrick Kohn. On the 21st of April 2003, my client, his wife and
their three children were involved in a car accident. All occupants of the
vehicle unfortunately lost there lives.

Since then I have made several enquiries to locate any of my clients
extended relatives this has also proved unsuccessful.
I have contacted you to assist in repartrating the money and property left
behind by my client before they get confisicated or declared unserviceable
by the bank where this huge deposits were lodged particularly, where the
deceased had an account valued at about US$13million dollars. The bank has
issued me a notice to provide the next of kin.

Since I have been unsuccessfull in locating the relatives for over 2 years
now I seek your consent to present you as the next of kin of the deceased
so that the proceeds of this account valued at US$13million dollars can be
paid to you and then you and me can share the money. I have all necessary
legal documents that can be used to back up any claim we may make. All I
require is your honest co-operation to enable us see this deal through.

I guarantee that this will be executed under legitimate arrangement that
will protect you from any breach of the law. Please get in touch with me by
my private email above to enable us discuss further.Thank you very much for
your co-operation.

Best regards,
Barr. Johnson Saarumi

Quickie Blog

So I have a few minutes before my Panda job to jot down a few thoughts. The whole deal with the computer has been entirely frustrating. I knew of course that the whole trick to audio recording on a computer is getting the computer set up right, but, wow! what a mess this has been! I've been talking to techs at Sweetwater music as well as a company on the west coast that builds custom computers. What I've found interesting in this whole deal is that I suddenly feel very old. Last night I spent about an hour on the phone with a guy that sounded very Andy Andersonish. Of course, he could be an old geezer with a young tender voice, but the fact is that he is probably half my age. It was a joy to talk to him- but the techs at Sweetwater are another thing entirely. I always feel that they are talking down to me- and I wonder if they know that they are talking to an old geezer who could never possibly understand all this computer tech stuff.

maybe it's my imagination.

In the meantime, my dad's in the hospital and I find myself tearing up from time to time. I woke up at 3 A. M. today and couldn't get back to sleep. I found myself thinking about my computer problems mainly- not my dad. I feel guilty about this, but it seems to be an emotional avoidance issue common in the Kohn family- I see it in my sister and my mother also.

I'm very excited about the truck that CV is sending down to Louisiana. Roll on!
